My hair is almost fully silver now, next year I’m 40. I think it’s okay to think of myself as middle-aged. I grew up in the 80’s & was myself part of a generation that was desperately unkind & discriminatory to gay people. Equality was a long time catching up - I mean ye just 1/2
have to watch the show Friends to see how casually homophobic my generation were. I was guilty of that, of course I was. But we grew up & saw the Section 28 debate & understood that gay discrimination was deplorable. (Definitely gonna be more than 2 tweets here
)

I’m a desperately fallible man. A white heterosexual one. I have, in the past, sniggered at jokes that were misogynistic or racist or homophobic. It’s not cool, I’m not proud of it. I should have known better.
I don’t think people like me - white straight men - are needed in most debates or issues. Most things would probably be better sorted without us. But today, I respect the fight for equality enough to affirm my belief for this:
Today we can look on the despicable treatment of Alan Turing - who was integral in winning WWII - with shame.
Equality for gay people was long past due when we delivered it. I think that’s worth remembering when we look to transgender rights.
