The data show that employment grew the most in construction, but overall employment grew as well:
For wages, overall effects are positive, but construction wages fell by almost 2.5%:
Why did construction wages fall? Because the employment growth was the largest within that sector. A lot more people were working in construction.
Construction work saw a large increase in workers
Overall, this suggests that focusing on immigration’s wage effects is best done by thinking carefully about sector-by-sector effects. In two of the three sectors, immigration was good for everyone!
