Imagine getting rich and then making it your mission to harm trans people. This woman is doing untold damage to trans youth in the UK and beyond. https://twitter.com/nypost/status/1337096528465424386
🧵After this tweet, a follower asked me about the stat that 11% of trans women "regretted surgery". I clicked the link provided, and found it cited the 2015 US Transgender Survey. So, I googled the name of the survey, and found the report:
https://transequality.org/sites/default/files/docs/usts/USTS-Full-Report-Dec17.pdf
First of all, this survey is awesome. It has 27,715 respondents, and a wealth of information on the trans experience. But it has nothing even close to that fact about 11% of trans women regretting surgery. I did a control+F for 11%. Aha, 11% "de-transitioned at some point."
To understand what de-transition means, we need to understand transition. It has nothing to do with surgery. It refers to living according to your gender identity, rather than gender assigned at birth. In fact, only 10% of those assigned male at birth had had any kind of surgery.
So, these 11% are clearly not "regretting surgery"--most had none. Instead, they are going back and forth between living according to their gender identity and their assigned gender. Why might someone do that? You don't have to wonder, the survey tells you, and it's transphobia.
The #1 reason is pressure from a parent. So, de-transition could refer to a college kid home for the summer who needs to live according to their birth gender to not get kicked out. 30% say trouble getting a job. Only 5% say: "They realized gender transition was not for them."
What's the truth? I googled "rate of people who regret trans surgery." The incorrect 11% number is the first result. The second result is this WPATH provider survey, that shows the true rate is 0.3%--62 patients out of 22,725. End🧵 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6212091/
Don't want to delete and break the thread, but the second to last tweet should say "assigned gender". Apologies!
