Today @scotparl unanimously passed the Forensic Medical Services (Victims of Sexual Offences) (Scotland) Bill which will help the victims of rape and sexual assault
Brought forward by @thesnp health minister @JeaneF1MSP the new law empowers victims, giving them greater choice and access to NHS services before they make a police report. It might even increase reporting of this terrible crime
It will also give them the right to request a female forensic examiner - a priority for survivors who gave evidence on the bill to @SP_HealthSport which recommended that victims should be able to chose the sex of their examiner
This right was further clarified in the excellent #sexnotgender amendment by @JohannLamont which I was pleased to support along with SNP, Labour and Conservative MSPs. The number of female forensic examiners has increased & hopefully will improve further as a result of Bill
