Statement on Forensic Medical Services (Amendment by Johann Lamont)
Out for Independence would like to commemorate the passing of the Bill on Forensic Medical Services that went through the Scottish Parliament today. The passing of this Bill will make
a huge difference to survivors, empowering them at one of the most difficult times in their lives.
However, OFI must express deep concern that SNP parliamentarians voted in favour of Johann Lamont’s amendment to the Forensic Medical Services Bill. By the admission of many who
went on to vote in favour of the amendment, it changes nothing in how services will be delivered, therefore, it can only be concluded that such an amendment does not affect legal change, supporting it is not a neutral act; the effect of such amendment is clearly in messaging.
OFI also note that on such a landmark day, International Human Rights Day, the Trans community are still having to define and defend their human rights. Human rights are non-negotiable, and we stand with them against all forms of prejudice and intolerance.
As an organisation representing all members of the LGBTQ+ community, Out for Independence recognises that many of the voices celebrating the amendment are groups hostile to trans rights.
As highlighted by Monica Lennon, the legal sex of a trans woman with gender recognition certificate is female, and more broadly a significant number of organisations already operate a system that supports trans people’s right to self-identify.
Johann Lamont’s amendment does not change anything in practicality, and so we strongly ask MSPs to consider why transphobic hate groups see the passing of this amendment as a victory and to ask whether this is the direction a welcoming, inclusive Scotland should head in.
Out for Independence reaffirm our commitment – we stand in solidarity shoulder to shoulder with our trans siblings and will continue to our work in advocating for trans rights.
