Councillor for St Vital, Brian Mayes has been one of the most dogged combatants of delegates at police board meetings. He holds a pretty comfortable seat in one of WPG's biggest ridings, but mostly because of low voter turnout. Let's look a bit at his record:
He voted against opening portage and main, which would have improved downtown accessibility for pedestrians. He has pushed for more investment in road repairs and funding that only supports single-user car transportation.
He prioritized better walking trails and community services for bona vista, royalwood, and sage creek over accessible pedestrian routes for people in the downtown.
He is quoted in saying "We need to maintain and protect our libraries, community and recreational facilities and to keep all people active and involved." yet approves budgets that increase police funding and decrease funding to such services.
He is staunchly pro-police, and I quote, "Safety is of paramount importance not only in St. Vital but also in the City of Winnipeg. We need to invest more in police"
He also ran on a platform that included studying the TRC's calls to action. 1 of the delegates today emphasized the TRC's calls to action directly make recommendations of police that can be addressed through defunding and refunding community alternatives. No comment from Mayes.
