Since I could sleep I decided to read My Broken Mariko
I hadn't bought physical manga in a while tbh, but the premise of it and art intrigued me. Plus I had the suspicion (hope?) it'd also be gay.
And yeah its pretty damn good.
If you read the premise, or even the first few pages, it won't do anything to surprise you. Its a story about a girl coping with her closest friends suicide, a friend who had a life of abuse.
But it doesn't have to do something unexpected to be Great.
It shows that the autbor is writing Shiino from some measure of experience.
Its painful reading the moments of her and Mariko, if touching.
Especially the last few pages.
The art has this odd thing where stylistically you'll have panels of simpler, goofier, art to break up tension more than using actual humor.
The exact kind of panels you'd see having a quick gag with simpler art in any other manga.
Oh and if you're wondering if its gay
Kinda? It REALLY reads that way at times, but I get the impression it was intended more as 'very close, codependent, gal pals"
But there are some lines that come off as explicitly gay.
