I still cannot believe that, as a nation, we basically just decided to give up on meaningfully educating children for a entire year. What a disgrace.
I suppose it would be more accurate to say we've given up on meaningful *public* education for a year. Plenty of private schools appear to be managing in person education safely.
A lot of people are replying to this by noting how hard teachers and schools are working. That's actually my point. Setting national & state policies that treat education as an afterthought, then throwing educators and families in the deep end to make the best of it is giving up.
The instagram bromides are nice. But we're experiencing a catastrophic governance failure & in the span of 3 months went from safe school re-openings being an urgent priority with front page coverage to basically presuming the status quo will hold until a vaccine is distributed.
