CLASSISM: Twitter NG Case Study
A THREAD, no needles.

Class dismissed?
We haven't even taken attendance yet 😂😂.
The truth about classism is this, "everyone says they're not part of the class, but secretly want to be the captain."

Let's dive in, shall we?
One thing that has left me in awe over the years is the ability of humans to create a school of thought by just adding "ism" to a word. "Racism", "Communism"; "iberiberism"

And it seems like this current one has to do with actual "schools" of thought. It's called "classism"
To give you a broad idea, classism is basically the fact that you're in Primary 5 and another person is in Primary 4.

Get the picture?
But even more confusing is the fact that within your primary 5, there is still a Primary 5.1, Primary 5.2 etc.
The efikos/frontbenchers, the lone wolves, the middle children and the backbenchers.

It is a natural instinct in humans that make them gravitate towards people that have the same disposition as them, hence class.
Out of all the "-isms", classism seems to have a next of kin in "racism". Basically, classism is the belief that the class you belong to is better than another class.

This isn't more clearer than in the case of the Indian caste system, comprising the Hindus, sikhs and muslims.
And with this, comes a delusion of grandeur where every class believes it is superior to lower classes, creating a loop cos the one who looks down is also looked down upon.

Twitter NG provides a clear example of how this phenomenon works.
Like it or not, being active on Twitter NG comes with finding a class on the app.

There are three major classes on this platform, along with other subclasses. "Shepeteri", "Elite Twitter" and the newly formed "Banger Boys"
While I wouldn't bog you down with details, just note that other classes not mentioned fit into these categories.

These divisions are very clear by the manner of tweets each class puts out.
While "shepeteri" concocts unbelievable stories, scripts fake drama and tweets cringe stuff, elite twitter strives for "intellectual", which is sometimes pretentious.

And banger boys just want to shout "banger" under every pun or joke they make. That's basically the content.
And so, elite twitter looks down on both shepeteri and banger boys as being razz, shepeteri and banger boys take turns looking down on each other for being razz.

And they also look down on elite twitter as being condescending. "You get title now, we no go hear word."
Hidden within these are the small accounts which give all these classes their power, with hopes to at least enter one of them.

And when their accounts grow big, they look down on those still small accounts, while those small accounts look down on them for not being all that.
Even within these classes, there are still "sub-classes".

Just as the level of wealth or poverty differs within that class, so also is a person more elite than his "classmate", or more "shepeteri" than his fellow "shepeterian".
With so much looking down, it's a wonder why we don't see tweets about neck pain often.

The point is every class on Twitter thinks they're better than every other class and a suggestion that you belong to a class that isn't yours is enough to start a fight.
"Gender Wars twitter", "Dumb Takes twitter", "Picture Dump twitter", "Violence Twitter" which is a subsidiary of Shepeteri...

The list is endless.

This is just a confirmation of the fact that classism is a real thing even on a social app like twitter.
It's popular to say "it's just twitter", but at the end of the day it's not.

As long as people take twitter problems as real life problems, it will never be "just twitter". It's a community within a community within a community.
And as more people join, the chaos increases.

My personal solution to classism would be to burn the whole school down, but hey, how would we learn?

If you have solutions though, comment below and don't mind my ramblings. Just needed to get this off my chest.
BTW, I'm classless sha.

"I belong to nobody and I belong to everybody"

I'm the anomaly in the system like Neo in The Matrix 😂😂😂😂
