As Nick Timothy wasn't born until 1980 perhaps he'll excuse this slightly older voter explaining a few things. Yes, we had food but it was of lower quality than now and often dreary. Read this great piece by @KitchenBee on how the EU has fed us 1/ https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/what-brexit-means-for-british-food https://twitter.com/NJ_Timothy/status/1337065870305189888
There were enormous numbers of things we consider everyday now, which were then considered exotic and only for the wealthy. I know @NJ_Timothy is a conservative which means keeping things the same but I find it odd he wants to go backwards. 2/
Britain had only seen the end of rationing 20 years before, and the impact of fighting a war of national survival was still felt throughout the food supply chain and into our kitchens where a lot of skills had been lost. The opening of Europe and travel there eased that 3/
But here's the important thing. We produce only 60% of the food we eat now, down from well over 70% in the 90s. What's more in Jan when Brexit will kick in we will have significant gaps in our production of certain fresh vegetables and fruit that generally come in via france 4/
So when you say that we had food before 1973 you're saying we'll be fine. But the truth is our lives will be worse than now. And how can that be the aim of any political action? Here's an over view that I wrote for your former colleague ends @michaelgove http://www.jayrayner.co.uk/news/michael-gove-asked-me-to-a-meeting-to-share-my-expertise-i-declined-instead-ive-given-him-a-piece-of-my-mind/
