Every two weeks we get a new data release from PHAC and StatCan, so let's see what changed. The Prairies backfilled a lot of the missing occupation data, that's great! BC on the other hand is still refusing to share occupation data with PHAC. In the middle of a pandemic. https://twitter.com/vb_jens/status/1332007457019760641
For those late to the show, Mario Possamai, the senior advisor to the 2007 SARS commission, wrote a follow-up report examining Canada's COVID-19 response in light of the SARS report recommendations. And singled out BC for not sharing important data. https://twitter.com/vb_jens/status/1314590431267549184?s=20
On October 15 our PHO was asked specifically why BC stopped sharing that data with PHAC, the response was "We have not stopped sharing that [...] it’s part of the case report forms." Which is simply not true. https://twitter.com/vb_jens/status/1317232210810867712?s=20
On Nov 5 our PHO did a 180, "qualifying" that BC indeed stopped sharing this data with PHAC. Why did they stop? Because allegedly "StatCan was misrepresenting the data" (?!?!?) StatCan has extensive and accurate documentation on the case data they publish.
In summary, BC does not comply with national case report expectations because they got some bad press out of the data released by StatCan downstream. It's utterly ridiculous that a province can block national data collection efforts in the middle of a pandemic, yet here we are.
