Hard to overstate how big a deal this is for Morocco, which has been lobbying for the US & other countries to recognize its sovereignty over Western Sahara for decades. Virtually no other country in the world recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara

Official White House proclamation: "as of today, the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the entire Western Sahara territory and reaffirms its support for Morocco's ... realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute"
The Trump administration also announced it will open a new US consulate in Western Sahara territory, in Dakhla, "to promote economic and business opportunities for the region"
