More thoughts the appalling child poverty numbers for NS reported yesterday by @CCPANS From @ydentremont in today's @HfxExaminer "Child poverty catches our attention because it is one of the worst manifestations of inequality in our society. No kid deserves to grow up poor. 1/
"On the other hand, implicit in the notion that child poverty is a worse thing than poverty in general is the highly problematic idea of the “deserving poor.” Nobody deserves to be poor, but too often we spin narratives about the bad choices adults have made in life, 2/
"instead of working for more just outcomes." So true @ydentremont Systemic oppression, racism, and stigmatization of mental health issues and substance use all play a role in perpetuating child poverty. Nova Scotia has not done enough to dismantle these systems. 3/
Aside from those underlying assumptions of who is deserving, antiquated views persist about what a "family" looks like. What results over the decades is generational trauma and poverty. Children bear the brunt of this suffering. /4 #poverty #nspoli
