it’s almost midnight & I’m currently thinking of a modern uni au where hua cheng is in the middle of talking to he xuan in a lecture theatre when all of a sudden xie lian & shi qingxuan walk through the door & hua cheng just. stops talking & stares as they walk past
then he xuan glances around & spots them too & is like “huh? what are you staring at qingxuan for?” & hua cheng is like oh... oh so that’s qingxuan. your partner qingxuan. fuck. okay. & he’s just like “nvm” & doesn’t speak for the rest of the lecture
so we have beefleaf who are dating & hua cheng who has a massive crush on xie lian but THINKS THAT XIE LIAN IS SHI QINGXUAN AKA HIS BEST FRIEND’S PARTNER!!!!! & he plans to avoid xie lian to ignore his feelings but he just keeps seeing him everywhere
like one day he’s walking across campus & he passes a pond. xie lian is crouched at the edge, gliding his fingers through the water & smiling at the fish, & hua cheng just. is in awe. & he totally understands why he xuan would fall for someone like that
or another time, he’s in the library when he accidentally bumps into xie lian. he apologises & helps him pick up his books, then xie lian smiles at him & it literally takes hua cheng’s breath away. who wouldn’t fall for a smile like that?
he’s finding it harder & harder to cope with his feelings, especially when xie lian starts noticing him more & convinces hua cheng that they should be friends. xie lian is under the impression that this is his best friend’s boyfriend’s friend/roommate who already knows about him
so he doesn’t bother to introduce himself properly & he doesn’t need hua cheng to introduce himself either, they just kind of go with the flow. they text a lot, meet for lunch sometimes. xie lian starts to really like hua cheng... maybe a little bit too much
& then one day they’re in the park & xie lian looks so beautiful & hua cheng just. he can’t do this anymore. he can’t think, can’t breathe, can’t do anything. he kisses xie lian, & xie lian kisses him back. for a moment, it’s absolute bliss. it’s everything hua cheng has wanted
but then he remembers he xuan & he thinks, ‘oh no.’ & he pushes xie lian away. says they shouldn’t do this. it’s not right. they go their separate ways; they’re both a mess. hua cheng hates himself, & xie lian has never felt so heartbroken
a few days later, shi qingxuan visits hua cheng & he xuan’s apartment. hua cheng is usually out when he knows they’re coming over, because he can’t bear to see them & he xuan together. so he isn’t expecting a stranger to knock on the door & ask, “what did you do to a-lian?”
hua cheng just frowns & asks, “who the hell is a-lian?”
the stranger glares at him. spits out, “the guy you’ve been messing with for the last few weeks? he genuinely liked you, you bastard.”

that is, until he xuan walks into the room, looks at the stranger at the door, & says, “qingxuan, I didn’t know you were coming over today.”

it takes a while to explain, between hua cheng tearing out his hair & shi qingxuan still angrily demanding why he hurt xie lian, but eventually both he xuan & shi qingxuan understand what’s happened. shi qingxuan sighs & types something on their phone, then turns to hua cheng
“he’ll be here in twenty minutes. we’ll leave you to fix things—don’t screw this up.”
they leave, & hua cheng is left alone in an empty apartment, waiting for the guy he’s head over heels for to arrive so that he can apologise & clear up their misunderstandings

when xie lian finally arrives, the first thing hua cheng says to him is his name. he’s never called him by “xie lian” before; just “gege” instead. now that he knows his real name, he wants to say it. shout it, sing it, whisper it. whatever, he just wants to call xie lian
he feels equal parts embarrassed & frustrated with himself as he explains everything, & he can’t help but expect the worst. xie lian’s expression gives nothing away, & hua cheng can’t help but wonder how he could ever forgive him for hurting him the way he did
but somehow, xie lian understands. hua cheng supposes he should’ve expected that—he’s always been a good person. forgiving. kind. he’s the best person hua cheng has ever met, & he makes hua cheng good too. it’s the effect xie lian has on people; he makes them want to be better
so after talking about everything for a while & clearing up any misunderstandings, the two of them finally confess their real feelings for each other. they kiss again, & this time it’s sweet & soft, & neither of them want it to end
weeks later, they can laugh about everything that happened. he xuan will occasionally scoff & say to hua cheng, “I can’t believe you thought I was dating xie lian.”
& hua cheng will raise his eyebrows & ask, “are you saying you wouldn’t want to date gege? answer wisely.”

it almost always ends in bickering, with xie lian & shi qingxuan having to calm them down. & later, xie lian always makes sure to reassure hua cheng.
“I wouldn’t want anyone else but you.”
hua cheng smiles & replies, “I wouldn’t want anyone else but you either, gege.”
