Little known story: I was in Prof. Henkin’s Con Law class, back in 2001. I went on to TA and RA for him while at CLS. After graduation, I told him that I had started dating “Mr. Lembrich” from our section. He told me to set up a lunch for the three of us at Terrace in the Sky. https://twitter.com/columbialaw/status/1337055983491833857
This was the fanciest lunch place close to @ColumbiaLaw at the time. As soon as we were seated, Henkin asked my then-boyfriend, “What are your intentions toward Ms. Carter?” He proceeded to grill him on that, as well as his views on the Alien Torts Claims Act, for an hour.
At the conclusion of the lunch, Henkin gave Mr. Lembrich his blessing and wished us happiness. We had been dating only a few months. But we did end up marrying, and I hoped someday to introduce my mentor to my child.
We didn’t quite get there. My husband and I attended Prof. Henkin’s funeral when I was eight months pregnant. But he did get to see my job talk right before I joined the @ColumbiaLaw faculty. Henkin was a giant, but he was also an incredibly humble and caring mentor. I miss him.
