Today the Trump administration has finalized a new regulation on asylum that breaks the United States' promise to protect the vulnerable and ensure that no person is deported to their persecutors.

The rule limits asylum for anyone who has:
• Passed through 2 countries or stayed in another country for at least 14 days prior to arriving.
• Ever failed to pay taxes, paid them late, or failed to report any income to the IRS.
• Been unlawfully present for at least 1 year.

The rule will:
• Define persecution to only protect people from “extreme” harms, banning asylum on account of gender or opposition to gangs.
• Penalize children for not applying for asylum in a third country on their way here.
• Allow judges to deny asylum without a hearing.
