1/Do you study older surgical patients and #frailty using #NSQIP data?
Our new study in @IARS_Journals shows that your choice #frailty instrument really matters. https://bit.ly/2KcnmU1  @SylvieAucoin @OttAnesthesia
2/ using Bayesian methods we found that the #RAI-A was substantially more accurate when predicting mortality than the much more commonly used #NSQIP modified frailty index (5-item)
3/and the #RAI-A, but NOT the mFI, added new predictive information when added to the #NSQIP Risk calculator variables.
This is likely because the RAI is multidimensional and the mFI is a sparse comorbidity index at best.
4/Take-home:
1. When studying frailty make sure you use a true multidimensional instrument
2. Just because it is called frailty doesn’t mean it measures frailty
3. If you’re an NSQIP user, please leave the mFI 5-item behind.
