Progressives push forward.
Reactionaries push back.

It never ends until we give up.
So we have to keep pushing forward.

A lot of us liberals and progressives bought into a myth that goes like this: Because of the hard work of our liberal heroes. . .

. . . like MLK, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Susan B. Anthony etc etc. the evils of the past like slavery and 19th-century paternalism were eradicated.

People born after 1955 inherited (for the first time in American history) an expanding liberal democracy.

2/
Sometimes people who inherit something think they don't have to work for it. They think they are entitled to it.

Wrong. 🛎️🛎️

The anti-democratic forces will never go away. They'll always return for another battle.

They only win when we give up.

3/
People taught history after 1955 often got the sense that the arc of history looks like this⤵️

We are in a boat and we don't have to paddle. Without us doing anything at all, the boat will carry us to a better (more diverse, more fair) society.

4/
I adapted this idea from @TimothyDSnyder who talks about how Trump "broke" the story.

In fact, if we keep working hard each generation, the arc of history might look like this⤵️

Trump pushed the graph way, way down. But it was sliding down anyway.

5/
Whether or not the Democrats win the Senate in January, what we need to do going forward is exactly the same.

I haven't rewritten my "to do" list since the election, but same idea: More civic engagement, particularly at the local level.
