UNDERemployment. Do you know what it is?

Taking a job after college that does not require a degree.

Want to know more about it? I got you. Stay put. 😉
About 44% of ALL newly college graduates will take a job that will not require a degree.
BUT, don’t be discouraged!!! Only 19% of that 44% will land jobs that are more lower-skilled (waitresses, fast-food, heavily service-based jobs). That makes up ONLY 9% of a typical graduating cohort!
SILVER-LINING: If you are are one of these UNDERemployed graduates (a lot of us are... it’s more “normal” than you think 😉), these steps MAY help you land your dream job when you see an opening in your industry 👇🏾
1. Do NOT get discouraged if you are not working your dream job the minute you graduate. There is still no hard evidence that college is a “scam”. UNDERemployment is normal... definitely for your 1st 4-5 years out of school.
2. Try to find a job that you can use to create a colorful narrative about in an interview. Example:

Degree: Sports management

Can’t find a “dream job”? Go work at a Planet Fitness & GET A CERTIFICATE IN TRAINING
3. If you are working a low-skilled job (examples - fast food, server/waitress, bar-tending, cleaning service) 👇🏾

It may be best to OMIT this job from your resume or end date the job on your resume before applying for that dream job‼️

These jobs = Negative signals to employers
4. Blacks/Hispanics and other people of color are less likely to land jobs if they are UNDERemployed for long periods of time.

Sorry my peeps, but it comes with the territory. We have to be more strategic.
5. College graduates experience climb the ladder into those college- required, high-level jobs fairly quickly.

Continue to gain soft skills/certifications/trainings while you are hunting for that dream job. Most of us will get it within 5 years!
6. Decisions on college majors are EVERYTHING‼️

If you are having trouble finding work and have a degree in fields like communications, liberal arts, history, etc. and DEFINITELY Criminal Justice... we have a little bit of work to do but you can get to where you want to be!
UNDERemployment is a normal thing. College is not a “scam”. YOU can write your narrative.

I’ll keep posting more on The Code you need to know. 😉
