2./ Patrick was studying for a masters in "LGBT and gender studies" in Bologna. While there he bravely spoke out about Egypt's failure to prosecute the men who tortured and brutally murdered an Italian doctoral student called Guilio Regeni in 2016 https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/feb/09/italy-alarmed-after-egyptian-studying-in-bologna-arrested-in-cairo
3./ Today -appropriately- the Italian authorities charged 4 members of Egypt's national security agency with Guilio's murder. Guilio was researching labour unions. 4./ The right wing government in Italy recently concluded a huge arms deal with Egypt. Our own govt is a major supplier of arms to the country, some of which have been used against protesters, and has designated Egypt as a "key market for arms sales". https://caat.org.uk/resources/countries/egypt/
5./ In Egypt the crackdown against lesbians and gay men continues, with laws against "debauchery" used liberally to imprison. Bedayaa’s Legal Aid Project has documented "92 arrests of LGBT people in 2019" noting most took place “randomly off the street”. https://www.humandignitytrust.org/country-profile/egypt/
6./ This inescapable repression leads to tragedy. During a concert in Cairo in 2017 Sarah Hegazi raised a rainbow flag. She was arrested, tortured, denounced publicly and forced into exile.
