Fair warning: The following is an inside baseball thread
on the media ecosystem. Youâve been warned...

Back in 2011, while I was living in Boston, the New York Timesâ John Branch published a terrific and devastating piece on the tragic life of NHL enforcer, Derek Boogard. https://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/04/sports/hockey/derek-boogaard-a-boy-learns-to-brawl.html
It was the first time any media outlet had taken on the NHL over the impact of concussions on those who played Canadaâs game. At the time, CBC held the TV rights to the NHL, and the sports networks were angling for their shareâ so none of them had the appetite to take on the NHL.
I can remember feeling frustrating and embarrassed that it took New York Times reporters to uncover what was right underneath Canadian journalismâs nose.
Step forward nine years and the New York Timesâ breaks a terrific and devastating piece by @NickKristof on Montreal-based MindGeekâs Pornhub operation. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/04/opinion/sunday/pornhub-rape-trafficking.html
Predictably, the same handwringing takes place (Looking at you, @JesseBrown) over why it took an American outlet to break a uniquely Canadian story.
Except this time, it wasnât the New York Times that broke the storyââIt was @the_logic Quebec correspondent, @MartinPatriquin.
He first highlighted the pressure on Pornhubâs parent company MindGeek in a column in October. And followed it up in November, and then again yesterday. https://thelogic.co/news/quebec-ink/quebec-ink-data-makes-porn-purveyors-mindgeek-montreals-answer-to-netflix/?gift=ca34d4b9b3407bd1914eed7b86f5a139 https://thelogic.co/news/advocacy-groups-step-up-pressure-on-visa-mastercard-over-serving-controversial-porn-company-mindgeek/?gift=e09c4ec3510029bc04d9c6fed361a8e9
Here's the first piece he wrote: https://thelogic.co/news/quebec-ink/quebec-ink-data-makes-porn-purveyors-mindgeek-montreals-answer-to-netflix/?gift=ca34d4b9b3407bd1914eed7b86f5a139
It speaks to a uniquely Canadian culture that it takes the power of @NickKristof and @nytimes to have what some would consider ârealâ impact, when our own reporters in Canada have been doing this work diligently for months.
I recognize that this can come across as sour grapesââit isnât. This is about letting Canadians know that there is journalism taking place on tough issues and that there are brave reporters in Canada working tirelessly on your behalf.

Iâm immensely proud of @MartinPatriquin for his reporting and I encourage Canadians to support Canadian journalism - in all its forms- so that we donât need a foreign publication to shine a light on our country. Some of us are already doing that. (/end)
