The Kinney family had lived in the home for decades, but had taken out loans and then refinanced those loans to pay for their son's legal bills.
In response to the eviction, local activists took up the cause, and over the next few weeks, support grew.

This has become an anti-gentrification, anti-eviction cause, but since sovereign citizen legal arguments seem to have been what set this chain of events in motion, that's where I'm going to focus.
While it's pretty easy to mock sovereigns and their wacky beliefs, these schemes literally ruin people's lives.

One thing to keep an eye on is that the son tried to file criminal charges against people involved in the loss of the home, for example the man representing the company that purchase the home in 2018 in the post-foreclosure auction.

He's filed several lawsuits in fed court. In this one from August, he's sued the driver in car accident for $75,000.
