Barcelona vs Juventus :Tactical thoughts
The game was played and won in the first half with the additional push for the first spot in Group stage being sealed in the second. Juventus came out of the blocks with intensity and commitment whereas Barca lacked in both.
Juventus press
Pirlo instituted an ingenious 3-5-2 setup but unlike Osasuna and Farenscvaros who more or less used a same system there were several nuances that were different. Pirlo's system was more of Getafe model but more attacking.
The 3-5-2 easily in defense morphed into a lopsided 4-4-2 setup depending on the positioning of the ball this counter acted the midfield line getting narrow in case of 5-3-2 model.
Barcelona's decision to keep Griezmann as the CF played into the hands of Pirlo's tactics since they were well set up to block the central passage of play and since the wings were protected by the wing backs Sandro and Cuadrado. T
Alba was finding it tough to keep up on the left flank alone and Pedri was much more involved in central plays. Dest & Trincão had space and chances but their inexperience and lack of support from midfield was evident throughout the first half.
This is an example of the kind of opportunity that was presented on the right side throughout the 1st half. The lack of intent is clear from these plays, when it's carried out by a collective the movement of the ball would be much faster.
The inability of Pjanic to read the space ahead of him & drive to the space with the ball thereby making the opponent to committ before releasing a forward pass to Dest or Trincão is not an acceptable at this level.
Just imagine what an academy profile would have done?
There were opportunities to advance which never happened. 2 different options are marked in yellow and blue. Both are not performed and the ball ends up being played back to Araujo.
This raises the question whether the players are clear about their roles in this system?
Again yet another chance and the lack of positional awareness is again visible.
Griezmann needs to be right at the shoulders of De Light. Above all with that sort of time & space, Pjanic has to make that pass to appreciate the runs provided by Trincão & Dest. Period!!
The advantage that Pirlo intended to create in midfield was achieved through the 3-5-2 and Morata starting ahead of Dybala was more suiting to system in general. And a "Bi-triangulation" was performed in order to have wide array of options in midfield whenever they had the ball.
The positioning of Arthur-Meckinnie-Morata confuses De Jong & moves to Arthur and unsettle the balance of double pivot by drawing Pjanic out of position. Juve gets it into Ramsey who has positioned himself in midfield spaces left by Pjanic and plays a first time ball to Morata.
The above sequence is a by product of a "Morata-Meckinnie interchange" on the right side modeled to unsettle the 4-4-2 structure of Barcelona defense. Meckinnie's versatility rightly fit this system.
In this very sequence the run of Meckinnie bypassing forces Lenglet wide which opens up a huge gap between the CBs for Morata to exploit another application of the same system.
On the left it Pirlo set-up a "Ronaldo Ramsey interchange" and Sandro being high up the pitch to exploit Trincão's higher position on the pitch when compared to Pedri on other flank.
This is a result of same interchange mentioned above and Araujo did a commendable job in putting out the fire. Pjanic's reluctance to track the run of Sandro after the ball loose free from an Araujo tackle is poor match awareness or bad attitude.
Araujo's pace and aggressive attitude rightly personifies a much younger Pique & with some amount of experience in the highest level can avoid some silly positional errors in the box. BTW that foul on Ronaldo seemed like something that all defenders do nowadays🤷 & get away with.
And these calls are made only when it's against Barca.
And let's end this on a positive note the fact that Riqui Puig received 25min to play made the match worthy watch besides the loss. And the why do we fans keep saying that Riqui is the solution it's given below.
The body posture to recieve the ball and the flick to set it into the free space to run onto is something that was hardwired into their brains at the academy and he knows to do it the best.
Then there's this, I'll not waste my words describing it just watch and enjoy...
