In many places returnees amounted to 4-8% of the working population. The data in the article is amazing. Still, I doubt that small BG towns with no industry can absorb these workers. What this shows rather is that CEE provides a labor reserve to be rapidly shed when crisis hits/2
What is more interesting is how returning emigrants affected the mass anti-government protests in Bulgaria. With @Tom_Junes we wrote a paper earlier on how emigration affects protest. This is also class-based since many returning BG students participated in the 2020 protests. /4
It would be interesting to know whether similar patterns of emigrants returning to their home countries have been observed also in Southern Europe.
