Some of my first year students have been struggling with writing essays and I found myself giving advice based on my own struggles as someone for whom English was a second language and to whom writing didn't come naturally:
1. Write in short sentences. They help with clarity.
1. Write in short sentences. They help with clarity.
2. Read. Not just your law textbooks and articles but fiction and, most especially, literary essays. I found myself recommending they visit @LRB, the @NewYorker and/or @lithub weekly. I strongly believe that better writing comes from better reading and happens almost by osmosis
3. Form writing groups. Even from the first year of undergraduate. They can review your work and give you feedback. And keep you company.
4. If uohre struggling to write, more often than not it is because the idea isn't clear in your head. Spend some time thinking about it. Talk about it loudly or with others.
5. If you find the screen daunting, write by hand first. There is something about pen and paper that makes writing easier and makes is more creative, I find.
6. Finally as with anything, practice makes perfect. The mode you write, the better your writing will get.
And, as you can see from this thread, typos are an inevitability!
