Refugees in
,largely from Muslim-majority countries, with a mental disorder much less likely to attempt suicide than
-born individuals with a mental disorder. One is tempted to invoke Durkheim here & posit the role of culture, specifically differing levels of individualism. https://twitter.com/DrAPitman/status/1336364757046206465

Sweden is the âleast religious nation in Western Europeâ
Religion helps to provide a sense of belonging & that sense of belonging is protective against suicide. https://www.thelocal.se/20150413/swedes-least-religious-in-western-world

It is perhaps not a coincidence that the least religious nation in Western Europe is also the loneliest. 52% of Swedish households contain only one person, the highest such a figure in Europe. https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/-/DDN-20170905-1?inheritRedirect=true
Its too simplistic to say: higher levels of individualism results in more suicides & lower levels of individualism results in less suicides. But its certainly a factor you couldn't & shouldn't discount. A sense of belonging is a powerful protective factor

The decline in religious faith & observance, in the West generally, doesn't really help in that regard. Screen-shots taken from Robert Putnamâs latest book.
âThere is established and consistent findings from epidemiologic studies, among individuals, that religion.... is associated with lower all-cause and cause-specific mortality attributed to suicide, alcohol, cardiovascular disease and cancer.â https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0277953620303257
If religious belief/observance was a drug or a form of therapy there would be a clamour for it to be prescribed en masse & for the government to invest in it.
Humans are social animals & religion is one of the most powerful forms of social glue that we have ever created. Good luck trying to find a form of social glue that works anywhere near as well.
