1/ Today we launch the #SmallCharitiesData hub, a new resource pulling together quantitative data on #SmallButVital charities. Spanning 5 years, this data highlights the financial pressures faced by #charities before the onset of the current health crisis. http://smallcharitiesdata.org
2/ Many of these charities provide vital services to people in their local communities. In fact, in 2020, 82% report undertaking service delivery ‘a great deal’ or ‘a fair amount’, up from 63% in 2017.

3/ Even before the pandemic, charities were seeing a year on year decline in income. Government income, the second largest source for small charities, has reached the lowest level in five years. https://smallcharitiesdata.org/insight/government-funding-to-small-charities/
4/ Small and local charities like @Pan1986 a London based charity that works with people who are marginalised, have seen the impact of a 20% decrease in government funding and how it affects other income streams.
5/ However, since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, majority of charities have reported further funding decline. The impact of this will be felt through local communities, where over 75% of charities operate, delivering services directly to local people https://smallcharitiesdata.org/insight/the-impact-of-covid-19-on-small-charities/
6/ They are one of the 79% of #SmallButVital charities continuing their services in full or in part during the pandemic, reaching people and in local communities https://smallcharitiesdata.org/insight/the-impact-of-covid-19-on-small-charities/
7/ This is consistent with what we have seen throughout the COVID crisis. Earlier this year we reported how small and local charities have:
their range of support
seen severe funding shortfall
had spikes in demand

8/ Figures from our new analysis ‘Small Charities Responding to COVID: Winter Update’ shows how many #charities stepped outside of their established role to meet the urgency of new needs and providing new services for communities
9/ Alongside meeting new needs, many charities have dealt simultaneously with issues that existed before the pandemic & have been amplified by the onset of the crisis. They have had to rethink their existing services for the ‘new normal’. Read

10/ But what does this mean for the crisis that will persist beyond 2020, as a result of COVID and of deep-seated inequalities throughout local communities?
11/ We believe that an effective response starts with good data, which is why we partnered with others across the sector to build this resource. It highlights the key ways that small charities make a distinctive impact across the country.
