United crashed out of the UCL after a defeat to RB Leipzig. Some fans put the blame on Wan-Bissaka, who left his back post unmarked again, with some even wanting him to never play for the club again.
However, is this really the problem?
In this thread, I will discuss:
- Reasons behind this tactic
- Why this tactic doesn’t work
- Who is to blame for this

Our full backs tuck in to protect our centre backs. As you can see, our centre backs' positioning is awful, which left AWB in a 1v2 situation, and he had to tuck in to prevent a direct shot at goal.
This has happened many times and United have conceded many goals because of it. Oppositions often make the intelligent run at the back post, and they’ll score unmarked.
Fans have therefore criticised the positioning of the full backs. They think the problem is individual errors, and not tactics. Is it really though?
Here are just some examples of full backs tucking in, leaving the back post unmarked, when Solskjaer is in charge. Some of these happened before the arrival of AWB.
How is this not a tactical issue when other players were doing the same thing? The coaching has to be blamed for their incompetence and inability to notice the problem.
In conclusion, not marking the back post has always been a problem under solskjaer. It is a problem from the coaching staff, NOT from the players.
