I might be painted as some cricketer's Bhakt or Hater, but I have often felt, that captaincy shouldn't be measured with the team records.Any one could have captained Australia from 99-2007 & won those WCs, or anyone could have captained MI to the title in #IPL2020. Captaincy for me is the art of the captain being one step ahead or having Plan B/C ready in a crisis situation. And even having those plans, the results might not be in your favour because there are various factors involved. Something like a toss, can be huge determinant (2)
Apart from this, I judge a captain with his thought process and how he manages his players (backing, injury, usage of bowlers etc) or reverses a trend which challenges the conventional wisdom. That is why for me, Dravid & Baz would be the best captains. (3)
Dravid in 2005-06 ensured that India gets away with the mentality of choking while chasing & ensured that the Top order batsmen like Dhoni/Raina become middle order guns as he identified them as having the skill set reqd for the role. Baz, on the other hand, always looked to (4)
kill the game whenever the opportunity presented. He didn't like to let the game drift away and was aggressive in his approach when the opposition least expected. These two may not have the biggest trophies, in fact, 2007 is a major blip in Dravid's career, but it shouldn't
take away the fact that he was a very astute tactician & ahead of the game. Same for Baz.
Not saying that Dhoni/Ganguly/Ponting etc aren't great or good enough. Just that the lens of viewing captiancy should change.
