I guess Americans are risk takers regardless of the toll…"More than four in five counties, with a combined population of 310 million people, actually saw a greater share of residents away from home on Thanksgiving this year compared to 2019.” https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2020-us-thanksgiving-travel-amid-covid/?srnd=premium
I mean, the decision by millions of Americans to disregard public health guidance is really an indication of our culture & the state of our nation. This is about us… not about government regs. And I suppose, we as a nation, must bear the consequences of our collective behaviors.
"Several states w/major Covid-19 hotspots also saw some of the most travel. In Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota & Wyoming, share of people travelling was above the national average in 80% of counties with more than 100 new cases per 100,000 residents going into Thanksgiving."
So in the midst of our biggest spike in cases and deaths… affecting all ages and segments of society… we chose to bet on herd immunity and accept massive infection. Not all of us, but a lot of us. And we are all in it together. For better or worse. https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2020-us-thanksgiving-travel-amid-covid/?srnd=premium
And I am not judging in this moment… I am just saying that the population opted for a strategy that has led us to be leaders in infections and deaths per capita. And a path that is at odds with most public health advice. We have set ourselves on this path. A revealed preference.
And of note, that strategy put individuals at risk, overwhelmed our health system, and tanked our economy. But question is…could we have gotten the country to pull together and found a better way? Are we capable of all pulling together? At least most of us. Future depends on it.
