When I show up at a protest, march our direct action, I look around at what is going on, find a way I can contribute and start helping.

I don't look for people doing things and try to become friends. I don't bug people about who's in charge.

I get busy. I pay attention.
Very rarely do I walk into an action with any clear idea of what my role will be.

I'm not aiming for a position or title. I know what my skills are. I can see what's lacking (that's one of my skills), and I try to fill the gap.

Sometimes the work is public, sometimes it's not.
If you want to help, just help.

If you hang around asking questions, people are going to think you're a cop.

Being helpful doesn't always include knowing who is who and what is what, and for your own sake and opsec, it's often best to know less, allegedly.
"I try to keep things on a need-to-know, and right now, I don't think I need to know," is something I say fairly often.

Don't let your ego get you caught up.

Carry on!
