Okay, so, I've been thinking a lot about America's COVID-19 response, and I've decided the best way to explain why we failed is this:

The central premise of James Dolan's tenure as Knicks owner is that we are always one miracle away from solving all of our problems.

This is also how Trump treated COVID-19 in the early months. He said we would go from 15 cases down to zero. He said, like a miracle, it would disappear by Easter; and then by the summer; and then by Election Day.

Of course, what Dolan should have done was been honest with Knicks fans. He should have said:
We're gonna spend a few years losing—but we'll draft good players and build a winning culture.
That's what the best teams do. They accept short term defeats for long term success.

We're gonna have to shut down for a period of time; wear masks; ventilate; and quarantine.

But the problem with people like Donald Trump and James Dolan is they always fail the marshmallow test. Because they operate out of a place of fear. And their lives of privilege have made it so they always think there's a short cut.

Now, I know Donald Trump has killed hundreds of thousands of people—and all James Dolan has done is break millions of hearts. Forget apples and oranges. This is comparing mass murder to lottery picks.
But I do feel like being a Knicks fan has made everything that happened this year feel more predictable, even if it's been no less depressing.
