It's been an incredibly challenging year for student journalists everywhere, but I couldn't be more proud of everyone at @TheSimmonsVoice.

By the end of 2020, we'll have published twice as many stories as we did in 2019. We've already doubled our readership. Keeping members of our community informed during these challenging times has been our main priority-- I'm so glad we were able to serve a larger audience.
Aside from the amount of content we produced, the types of stories we worked on changed drastically. News stories went from being 18.8% of our content to 46.8%. Feature stories went from being 3.1% of content to 16.2%.
Since March, our work has been featured in @WBUR, @nytimes, and @SPLC. We may be a tiny and less resourced newsroom compared to other schools, but the quality of our content doesn't differ!
We've increased our social presence with a large focus on Instagram (we doubled our following!!). Instagram is how we've been able to reach more students and hear their questions about the University's pandemic response. Those questions have guided our journalism since March.
We launched the Welcome Home podcast alongside @RadioSimmons with a clear goal: keep our community connected during the online semester and give people a space to share their stories. It goes without saying that all of this is possible because of the leadership from our wonderful EIC @sarcarlon! She's an absolute gem and I hope when the pandemics over she can go back to writing about her true passion, Brexit.
I'm going to miss working with everyone at @TheSimmonsVoice when I graduate in a few weeks, but I can't wait to see how this student newsroom continues to blossom.
