Aguda's reasoning was that many of their young women were too unschooled to pass the test (!!!). Goell, an imposing founders-type guy with a big white beard thundered that this would be the end of women in the IDF. I stupidly raised my hand and said...
...wouldn't the IDF check up on the liars? He laughed derisively (a thing, I found, among Israeli political types) and said "Ezer is not going to send soldiers with cameras to the beaches on Shabbat." (1978, Ezer Weizman was defense minister.) I learned to shut up...
..this was around November. Six months later, summer time, there was a news item: Ezer Weizman ordered soldiers with cameras to the beaches to photograph women who falsely claimed to be religious. Lesson: Never predict anything about Israeli politics. Not even what WON'T happen.
