#AFNAGA2020 Resolution #13 is about to hit the floor led by @Khelsilem @DorisKDFN @KluaneAdamek. It’s an opportunity for the AFN to demonstrate leadership in ending discrimination across organizations. http://ItsTimeFirstNations.ca #ItsTimeFirstNations. Live tweets here...
Side point. Interesting...there's omnibus resolutions at AFN. Things change with an online format. Okay, here we go!
Want to see the full resolution? Check it out here: https://itstimefirstnations.ca/the-resolution
Note the resolution has clear set timelines for @AFN_Updates to act.
We used to have balance, we can bring it back. Imagine if the voices of First Nations women were heard loud and clear in every committee, every meeting. We owe it to our daughters.
Speaking as 2S, I fully support this resolution. I fully support safety for women, LGBTQ2S and youth leaders. #itstimefirstnations
@Khelsilem is on the floor, one of the two spokespersons from Squamish Nation. Speaking about the future, and there's tech issues...mute your mics if you're not speaking.
Oh it's not cool. Voices heard on unmuted mic are saying crap. Anyone want to claim this mess?
Back to the Mover. Safety for women, so they don't have fear. For our children to grow up to be the leaders we need them to be. It's especially important for men to do their part, to do better. For all the work done for MMIWG, and more than the pins on our jackets, it's time
for real action. A dialogue on real change. @Khelsilem says it is his dream for a future that holds up our women, for an AFN to be the role model. Thank you to all those who have done work for inclusion, that we can build on.
Seconder @DorisKDFN has the floor. Harassment and discrimination is not unique to AFN. Let's look at this from lens of positive change. Leaders must lead by example and stand up against discrimination, protect UNDRIP and MMWIG.
Duty to uphold the knowledges of our ancestors. AFN has a duty and an opportunity. Systemic problems require systemic resolutions. Women, youth, 2SLGBTQ need to feel safe. AFN needs to be a leader, not just for First Nations but for Canada. #ItsTimeFirstNations
We must lead with dignity. We cannot say we honour and protect our women and children on the stage, but do the exact opposite. And it's a two-way street, we must own and address our own issues. Every voice deserves respect and dignity. #ItsTimeFirstNations
Input on resolution #13. We call on Canada to reconcile, this is how we need to do our own reconciliation: correct our own policies, challenges that women leaders have faced. Yukon has history of strong women leaders, they lead the way. #ItsTimeFirstNations
Input...A woman leader shares her first-hand experience of harassment, but will never be deterred by discrimination. And applauds mover and seconder to help us emerge from colonial structures into our Indigenous laws, for posing a positive resolution. #ItsTimeFirstNations
Input on #13...A woman leader thanks @Khelsilem and @DorisKDFN who spoke with respect. A model of how we address each other at AFN. And we need to do this in our communities. Asks to add cyber-bullying to the resolution. #ItsTimeFirstNations #afnaga2020
Input on #13. AFN Lawyer takes stage on question if resolution conflicts with AFN charter. Notes guests and committees and Chiefs in committee are not bound by any AFN policy. Raises questions, quibbles about details. But says opinion is not contrary to the Charter.
Input on #13. Chief supports. Keep spirit and intent in view, we have responsibility to move forward, not replicate what outside world has taught. Opportunity to reaffirm our heritage. Can be uncomfortable, but healing requires it. Our people are watching us. #ItsTimeFirstNations
Input on #13. Womens Council wants 'investigation' be changed to 'review', then asks for substantial change. Which mover and seconder does not accept. And then another speaker asks for substantial change. Hmmm...
Input on #13. Chief supports. #ItsTimeFirstNations
Input on #13. @ORCRoseAnne speaks plainly. There are problems, and NCO needs to support this wholeheartedly. Shine a light on the problem so we can resolve it. Don't change a thing in resolution. Transform this organization now. #ItsTimeFirstNations
Input on #13. National Chief supports this resolution, but doesn't have control of the chairs. And then asks for amendments....hmmm. itstimebutnotthisway???
Mover and seconder agree to minor amendments, but not substantial amendments. Final strong word on #13 from @DorisKDFN: Please walk with us to ensure the safety of women, youth and 2SLGBTQIA. #ItsTimeFirstNations to vote.
