The 1st Intifada saw around 277 Israelis killed, of which 102 were IDF and 175 were civilians. It saw around 1600 Palestinians killed, mostly civilians, and tens of thousands wounded. Most of the violence committed by Palestinians was by rogue groups like Hamas. https://twitter.com/StopAntisemites/status/1336490278388174848
The reason the 1st Intifada is often celebrated is because the vast majority of Palestinians resorted to non-violence. This included refusing to pay taxes, strikes, boycotts of Israeli products, protests etc.

I'm friends with plenty of JVP haters, but this is purely dishonest
I'd like to reiterate that I'm against violence, and oppose and condemn any violence that took place during the 1st Intifada. The vast majority of Palestinians in the 1st Intifada did not engage in violence.

This isn't a fringe view. Benny Morris even defends the 1st Intifada
The 1st and 2nd Intifadas were radically different. If someone endorses the 2nd Intifada then it's fair to assume they're supporting suicide bombings, and other horrific actions that I do condemn. When someone endorses the 1st Intifada, they're usually supporting non-violence
I often get hesitent about talking about this kind of stuff cause I don't want people to think I support violence. So again, 100 percent against violence against civilians. But in this case, I think it's important to point out the difference between the intifadas
