I am going to live-tweet my reading of the FTC lawsuit (plus 48 attorney generals!) against Facebook. I don't have any conflicts of interest, but I am going into this skeptical. Also, I Am Not A Lawyer. Link: https://ag.ny.gov/sites/default/files/facebook_complaint_12.9.2020.pdf
The adopt the familiar media angle that you have to use Facebook as if they were selling food or something instead of a way to goof off when standing in line. I'm sorry, Facebook is not providing "an important service"
Cry more? I think anyone who signs up for Facebook API access knows that the company reserves the right to change or even flat out discontinue their API altogether, especially if they think it might threaten their business!
Yeah, duh. Of course that's why Facebook bought Instagram and WhatsApp. Why did you, dear FTC, approve them?
Eh. Show your work
Well, how do you explain Parler then?
Yes kids, this was in fact a thing that happened:
How hypocritical of them to not only use competition to try to win but also use competition to try to not lose!
I get the sense that this quote is supposed to be damning, but why? Wanting things and not wanting other companies to have them is a pretty normal thing businesses do
Another instance of trying to sound ominous, but why is this bad?
A 2010 study found Facebook was only way for hundreds of millions to connect with their friends and family? 🙄
These are certainly valid complaints
I wonder what Instagram and WhatsApp would be worth independently...
Anyway, all-in-all, this feels low-effort. It's not that these claims are wrong, but why approve these acquisitions if they were anti-competitive? Who at the FTC is going to resign in shame for having missed this? Coming in a decade after and saying "oops" doesn't cut it
If you are a regulator and care about the Sherman Antitrust Act, you should do your job and not approve mergers that consolidate competition.
If you go ahead and approve them but later change your mind because you don't like how they moderate political speech, I have no sympathy
If I were to sue the FTC for gross negligence, I'd probably just submit this PDF. It's not like any of this was not in plain view. They just changed their minds
