Found it interesting to see how the Steelers played Terry McLaurin. Held him to just 2 catches for 14 yards. They made it clear early on they weren’t going to let him beat them. On Washington’s 2nd drive, Steelers have the SS bail out to stay on top while the CB cuts underneath
Here, the Steelers play Cover 3 vs Washington’s empty set, but try to show 2 deep before the snap. The safety then buzzes down with a focus on McLaurin while the corner bails behind him to the deep 3rd.
Pretty standard practice for a lot of defenses to have a safety cut a crosser like this, but the speed at which Minkah Fitzpatrick does so, and how he’s got eyes on McLaurin the whole time, suggests McLaurin was a focus for the Steelers.
This focus on McLaurin of course opened up opportunities for others. Minkah is playing the deep half here, but his focus is purely on McLaurin outside, leaves Steven Sims open up the seam inside.
On Cam Sims’ big one-handed catch, McLaurin aligned to the other side of the field. FS in the middle of the field cheated to McLaurin’s side, despite Washington having 3 receivers to the other side. (Also I just wanted to tweet this catch again
