hyperfixations - a thread by a neurodivergent person (ADHD)
first of all, they vary in length and can be different in other neurodivergent people. my experiences will not be the same as another neurodivergent person but i hope this can enlighten some of you who throw around 'hyperfixations'
let's start with what they are. they're interests so: a group, a video game, a person, a character etc etc but it is very much an obsession of that thing. it goes beyond an interest.
let's take one of mine, the sims. i've spent over 400 hours playing that game, extremely unhealthy considering i only brought it around 2/3 months ago. this consists of not only my time but it becomes a craving, you need this thing in this case the sims otherwise +
you can become angry or extremely upset if you can't access it. it becomes something that completely absorbs you, it's all you can think about, it's all you watch on youtube or twitch or whatever, it's constantly on your mind and you NEED it +
and yes, the reality is self neglect. not showering, not eating, not sleeping, it completely consumes you to the point that in many cases you gamble between buying extra of that and food. these are serious and can have damaging affects. they're more than an interest +
they're something you can't live without. ofc this is not always the case, many can be healthy but majority of the time they're not.
please stop throwing around the word 'hyperfixation' when you have no idea what they are or the reality of what they can be.
