That interview is awful but why does it lead you to this conclusion? I don't speak Chinese & haven't lived on the mainland (tho I wish I could and had). Do I have little to offer? Should I quit my job? And what about next generation who might never be able to get visa to China? https://twitter.com/iandenisjohnson/status/1336627668272304128
The exclusivity among many "China hands," even ones I otherwise greatly admire, is counterproductive & would have discouraged me had I listened. The world will be better off the more ppl are encouraged to learn, whether or not they can meet a predetermined standard set by elites
I'm not celebrating my weaknesses, and always strive to be better, but the entire subject of "China" shouldn't be a niche issue reserved for a select few who are "permitted" to comment
I should add that when I have needed expertise on Chinese language or history etc for a story, I consult experts, just as I would for any other topic! These wonderful ppl have included women & men of various nationalities, ethnicities, age groups. No one has monopoly on knowledge
