THREAD: Espionage in the Golden State.
A big part of my reporting over the last few years has been about spying in California. It's an endlessly fascinating, under-covered, and (I think) important, subject. I'll write about it as much, and for as long, as I can.
A big part of my reporting over the last few years has been about spying in California. It's an endlessly fascinating, under-covered, and (I think) important, subject. I'll write about it as much, and for as long, as I can.
Here's my most recent California-related spy story (with the formidable @BethanyAllenEbr as lead author): about how a suspected Chinese intelligence operative sought to penetrate Bay Area politics, developing connections to current and future congressmen. https://www.axios.com/china-spy-california-politicians-9d2dfb99-f839-4e00-8bd8-59dec0daf589.html
And here's a deep dive I did on spying in Silicon Valley for @politico, where I broke the story on the suspected Chinese intelligence asset in Senator Feinstein's SF office. (This person wasn't her driver, as has been erroneously reported elsewhere.) https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/07/27/silicon-valley-spies-china-russia-219071
And here's my @ForeignPolicy story on how Russian intelligence was using Russia's San Francisco Consulate to get involved in all kinds of fascinating--and mysterious--hi-tech spying. https://foreignpolicy.com/2017/12/14/the-secret-history-of-the-russian-consulate-in-san-francisco-putin-trump-spies-moscow/
And here's a story I wrote for @politico on the 1980s spy case that made Adam Schiff a Russia hawk--involving a bumbling LA-based FBI agent who was honeypotted by a Soviet intel asset and who passed info to the Soviets. Schiff prosecuted the case. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2019/05/26/adam-schiff-russia-hawk-524-226983
Here's a story that was a pure joy to write for @YahooNews, about how a San Francisco-based Reagan campaign volunteer was approached by Soviet intelligence--and because an "access agent" for the CIA, helping turn the tables on the Russian spy. https://news.yahoo.com/russians-targeted-reagan-presidential-campaign-heres-cia-stop-100048764.html
And here's a story, also for @YahooNews, that goes in-depth on how Iran's Revolutionary Guard has focused on spying in Los Angeles, home to a huge Iranian diaspora population. Tehran's operatives are keenly focused on LA: https://news.yahoo.com/shadow-force-the-secret-history-of-the-us-intelligence-communitys-battle-with-irans-revolutionary-guard-090000959.html
There's many more California spying stories out there--including a book I'd like to write on an incredible cold war Silicon Valley espionage case.
