seems like americas biggest disadvantage in future wars is the fact that our military industrial complex is dominated by sclerotic incumbents who make money by bribing congress to buy shitty expensive equipment

am i wrong about this
why do we even put people in military airplanes anymore

pilots suck
- have to train them
- terrible if they die
- need tons of life support + space --> heavy ass plane
im skeptical the next conventional war lasts long enough for this to happen https://twitter.com/Aslaklakaslak/status/1336743201168822275?s=19

im thinking a lot about the Billy Mitchell problem now

tldr he argued that battleships were going to get creamed and advocated for aircraft carriers before WW2, this got him court martialed because the admirals LIKED battleships
the problem is the following

everyone KNOWS this is a problem

billy mitchell is a sterling example but not the only such case

so

why

the

hell

do

people

keep

doing

this

hypotheses:

1. hard to know when Mitchells are real vs charlatans

2. intractable org problems
probably both are true but based on this im leaning toward #2
