New from @BACP: Why I support #SCoPEd

What these statements overlook:

1) There’s already a professional standards register for counselling ( @prof_standards). You have to be a member of a membership body on the register to advertise on directories

This means being qualified and practising to certain standards.

2) #SCoPEd won’t stop the existence of £25 wowcher courses. I refer back to point 1 on why these courses will get you a very limited distance in the profession, with or without SCoPEd.
3) If the public doesn’t understand (or care that much) about the current difference between qualified, accredited, senior accredited therapists, how’s #SCoPEd going to change that? Particularly when clients have been excluded throughout the process of devising SCoPEd.
4) We don’t work in silos. A client looking for a private therapist won’t necessarily know what tier of therapist they need & a therapist may not know a client requires different competencies from them until part way through therapy. It’s not possible to neatly categorise #ScoPEd
That’s what the ethical framework is for - so that therapists agree to work within their field of competence. Putting us into #SCoPEd framework columns doesn’t change this.
5) Harm will continue to occur within the profession, with or without #SCoPEd. There’s nothing stopping a therapist working out of competency under SCoPEd, just as there isn’t now. Supervision, codes of ethical practice and high quality training are important to help reduce this.
6) Clients are more likely to suffer from a lack of diversity in the profession, as disadvantaged therapists are prevented from paying for the academic qualifications required for higher #SCoPEd tiers. Therefore, the more ‘difficult’ a client’s presenting issues, the more likely
They’ll be seen by a white, middle-class therapist. This is likely to present a further barrier to encouraging the public to access counselling, not succeed in removing them as #SCoPEd claims to be looking to do.
