Being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel means that already the tunnel has been dug, tracks are laid, and you have a locomotive propelling you forward. There are prerequisites before seeing that light is even possible.
It's hard to see a coronavirus vaccine as a light at the end of the tunnel in a country of 330M where health insurance is tied to employment, infrastructure has been neglected for half a century in favor of low taxes, and corporations are allowed to dictate resource allotment.
We've fallen down dealing with the pandemic thus far. And it's not just Trump/MAGA. Democrats pushed to reopen in haphazard and nonsensical ways. What indicators are there that we'll do any better handling a vaccine that needs 70% distribution to tamp down community spread?
Getting a vaccine that requires subzero storage and two doses to a minimum of 230M Americans is a monumental task. Who's going to keep track that folks get both doses? Private insurers? A government that overlooks the well being of tens of millions of people every other day?
What about marginalized communities such as undocumented immigrants who Republicans detest or unhoused persons who Democrats view more as a nuisance than a tragedy? Will they be left behind to get infected and die as privileged people lay claim to a vaccine?
