/ Books are my constant companions. This week I finished my 40th non-academic book of 2020. Recognize this reflects huge privilege but I want to highlight three outstanding books I read this year - maybe you're looking for holiday reads.
/ LUSTER by @RavenLeilani and WANT by @lynnsstrong. These are quite different books that are linked in my mind because I read them in quick succession and they are two of the best novels I’ve read in some time.
/ They each, in their different ways, explore various forms of failure, how much less we get than we deserve, the intimacies of women’s lives in late capitalism and the ways we try to find a way.
/ In both, the writing is absolutely clever, astonishing, and urgent. Language that lodges itself in the nooks and crannies of the brain and blows open whole new spaces.
/ Last, THE ARGONAUTS by Maggie Nelson. Late to the party on this one, but for me it was nothing short of life-changing, or at least mind-altering, which is the same thing after all.
/ Freedom, queerness, art, family - it's hard to explain what this one is about. It’s a genre-bender but after reading it I wondered if I ever needed to read any other kind of book.
/ This is the end of My Review of Books 2020. Always happy to make personalized recommendations and talk texts!
