just seen a heart rending series of insta stories from a pal who’s a sex work decrim organiser, regarding this last minute nordic model proposal from the labour party. this proposal will harm sex workers by reducing their income and their safety. it will not prevent trafficking!
the uk’s poverty wages make sex work the only viable option for so many single parents, queer, trans and disabled people. the nordic model makes sex work less safe and less profitable - meaning people have to do more of it, and more dangerous forms of it, to live.
the nordic model effectively destroys the security arrangements sex workers rely on to stay safe. what punter is going to hand over his details if buying sex is criminalised? it makes violent men less accountable.
criminalising the buying of sex means more sex workers will come into contact with cops, and more will get brutalised and criminalised themselves, meaning their chances of leaving sex work if they want to are reduced!
people who support this model fall into 2 groups: those who don’t understand that it increases the violence sex workers face, and those who know but don’t care because sex worker safety is acceptable collateral damage in their fight against the existence of sex work.
