Why does the @theCCCuk say we need new nuclear for net zero? A thread👇

We’ve burned coal for 18 straight days. Today our grid is 60% gas and coal, the two most polluting fuels. #Nuclear has been our leading zero-carbon generator throughout that time. https://twitter.com/myGridGB/status/1336630887065276418
@ng_eso has warned repeatedly about electricity supplies in the past few weeks because of high demand and low wind. Burning gas and coal to fill the gap is unaffordable. Prices reached ÂŁ350/MWh on the day ahead market for Sunday. https://twitter.com/ng_eso/status/1335330535497994242
Without new #nuclear, we will have more gas burning, more coal burning, more warnings and price spikes. The @theCCCuk warned today that without new projects zero-carbon generation will fall from 130 TWh today to 90 TWh in by 2030: https://www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Policies-for-the-Sixth-Carbon-Budget-and-Net-Zero.pdf
In fact, we have a blueprint out of our fossil fuel dependency: #Nuclear power, alongside wind and hydrogen as part of a robust low-carbon mix. This is the right approach, we need to get on and build to cut carbon and create good jobs across the country.
