We found that people with mental health problems were three times more likely than those without a mental health problem to have been the victim of an online scam. This means that a majority (61%) of online scam victims have experienced a mental health problem
Common symptoms of mental health problems such as difficulties processing information, increased impulsivity and low energy levels can make it harder for those of us with a mental health problem to spot and avoid online scams
Online scams can have wide ranging impacts on people’s lives. They commonly affect people’s finances, mental health and confidence using the internet
To reduce harm, the government should include online scams in its upcoming Online Harms bill and require online services, such as social media or advertising platforms, to do more to stop scams from appearing
