Today, a bill to criminalise the purchase of sex as well as banning all forms of profiting from sex work - including review websites - passed its first reading in the House of Commons.
The bill was proposed by Diana Johnson MP, who claimed that the UK had become very attractive to traffickers and that trafficking was being enabled by online advertising platforms. The Nordic Model is NOT a solution to trafficking: https://decrimnow.org.uk/trafficking-migration-and-borders/
As we know from the US, banning advertising platforms has catastrophic effects - including making sex workers MORE susceptible to trafficking and other violence, and making it more difficult to find victims of trafficking. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/sex-workers-sesta-fosta_n_5ad0d7d0e4b0edca2cb964d9
If you want to understand why the Nordic Model is extremely dangerous, everything you need to know is here https://www.swarmcollective.org/blog/the-swedish-model
As @lynbrownmp said, we need to create policy that allows sex workers choice, tackling policy and strengthening our ability to turn down clients. Decriminalisation would give sex workers this! https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/beyond-trafficking-and-slavery/decriminalising-sex-work-in-new-zealand-its-history-and-impact/
The introduction of this bill, at a time when sex workers have already seen the catastrophic effects of a “reduction in demand” due to the pandemic, is a brutal attack on the lives and livelihoods of a vulnerable community.
The bill will now progress to a second reading on the 29th of January. Watch this space: we will be organising alongside @SexWorkHive @ProstitutesColl @labour4decrim and others to protect our rights and safety
