Long read so bookmark it if you don't have time right now. Devastating and wide ranging discussion about debt (primarily education debt) and how it's all a mirage. https://twitter.com/victorerikray/status/1336669869979398146
I paid off my graduate school debt because 1) I didn't have undergrad debt because I went to a state school at a time when tuition was reasonable enough that my middle class parents were able to save enough to send me.
I paid off my graduate school debt because 2) I was able to get jobs with the kinds of salaries that allowed me to chip away at it.
I paid off my graduate school debt because my parents helped me with the down payment on a home purchase. I used the money I made selling that home to finally retire my debt.
I paid off my graduate school debt because 4) even though the tuition at a private MBA program seemed staggeringly high at the time ($24K or so a year back in the late 90s) it was still half what it is 20+ years later.
I paid off my graduate school debt because 5) I was able to get into a "name" program partly on the reputational strength of my undergrad degree (that, let's not forget, my parents paid for because at least some middle class families could do that back then).
So yeah, though I'd never claim to have been raised "wealthy," there was absolutely "white wealth" that ultimately allowed me to pay off that debt.
